Drive to nip waterborne diseases in the
bud
Gurgaon,
May 31
With the monsoon round the corner, the district health department
has launched a campaign to thwart the outbreak of waterborne diseases.
The
department has cautioned all concerned not to allow the sale of
cut fruit and usage of untreated water in order to make cold drinks
and others goodies. Besides, those selling meat have also been
warned.
The
department has initiated a campaign to educate the consumers not
to buy eatables lying in unhygienic conditions.
The
district health officer warned that anyone found violating the
department’s guidelines and found selling contaminated eatables
would be dealt with severely. The department will soon launch
surprise checks after the ongoing awareness campaign was through.
However,
many are sceptical of the entire exercise. This stems from the
past experiences of the residents. The authorities issue warnings
and launch drives every year. But the vested interests show least
regard for the measures.
Many
residents feel that much more should be done during summer and
the monsoon at least. The population in the city is increasing
and the vendors are doing a roaring business. They even palm off
eatables which are more often of very low quality. Every summer
and monsoon, there have been reports of a large number of the
seasonal diseases.
Several
elderly residents recalled that about three years ago there was
an outbreak of dengue in the nearby Mewat areas of this district.
The
epidemic broke in at the end of the monsoon season mainly due
to floodlike situation. There were reports that many in the city
got infected with dengue and other waterborne diseases. The once-bitten-twice-shy
authorities have kept that epidemic in view perhaps before launching
the present campaign.

Traffic
fine collection kiosk installed
Tribune News Service
New
Delhi, May 31
The traffic police today installed a “touch screen-based
automatic payment collection kiosk” at the Teen Murti Traffic
Police Lines for making payment on any day by offenders who were
fined for violation of traffic rules. The scheme will be subsequently
extended to two other locations in R. K. Puram and Old Police
Lines on Rajpur Road, Civil Lines area.
The
offenders can make the payment of challan in any of the kiosks
through cheque. Now there is no need to waste time in queue. A
violator can also make a query regarding previous traffic violations.
Today, the machine was unveiled at the Traffic Police Lines, Teen
Murti, by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mr Maxwell
Pereira.
He
said that the automatic depositing machine had all the state-of-the-art
features
such as touch-screen monitor, Barcode scanner, MICR cheque reader
and safety chest. All that the user has to do is to enter the
vehicle number or the notice number to see the number of pending
challans against his vehicle. The details are displayed on the
screen, which will prompt the user to confirm and make the payment.
The user has just to confirm the amount and insert the cheque
into the designated slot.
If
the cheque is accepted, the kiosk will immediately print and deliver
the receipt as confirmation of the acceptance of the payment with
all the transaction details printed at the back of the cheque
and then it is dropped into the safety chest inside the cheque
depository machine.
The
machine will reject anything other than cheque deposited in it.
The payment made by the cheque is considered only on realisation
of the amount and in case of it getting bounced the same will
mean non-payment and the case may be forwarded to the court for
further action.
The
cheque depositing machines are networked with the central computer
of the police through an ISDN connection and the transaction details
are immediately uploaded to the central database and are accounted
for, the Joint Commissioner said.
