Police plan for a jam-free trade fair

delhi: the police on friday finalised traffic arrangements for
the india international trade fair, to be held at pragati maidan
from november 14 to 27. said joint commissioner of police (traffic)
maxwell pereira, "the quantum of visitors to the trade fair
has increased. and the vehicular traffic on the road has also
gone up." adds arun kampani, deputy commissioner of police
(new delhi range -traffic),"this year, we will not block
the roads around pragati maidan. we would advise commuters to
take alternative routes. the diversion plans would be effected
when traffic become heavy." a look at the arrangements. parking:
about 17 parking lots around pragati maidan have been earmarked
for nearly 10,000 vehicles. while the parking lot inside the maidan
can take 1,000 cars, the one near national stadium is for the
media. india gate lawns: this will be used to park 5,000 vehicles
in the lawns and the radial roads. there will be at least five
shuttle buses between the parking area and the maidan gates. display
boards: the name, address and telephone number of the parking
contractors, along with parking charges, would be displayed prominently.
advised diversions: those coming from tilak bridge and going east
or south, are advised to take tilak marg and turn right on the
india gate outer circle. for the eastbound, they should turn left
and go through the purana qila road, and turn right to take bhairon
road and head for nizamuddin bridge. for the southbound, they
should take sher shah road and get on to mathura road. they can
also take zakir hussain marg. * fo buses coming from the south,
they should turn left after lodi hotel flyover and take zakir
hussain marg. after they cross india gate, they can take copernicus
marg for connaught place, or tilak marg for central delhi. * for
commuters from the east, they should take the bhairon road, turn
left, and take the sher shah road. after crossing the india gate
outer circle, they should take copernicus marg for central or
north delhi. personnel deployment: traffic policemen will be working
in two shifts — 9 am to 3 pm and 3 pm to 9.30 pm. more than
350 cops will be manning the junctions around pragati maidan.
dtc special service: the dtc will be plying shuttle services.
dtc buses coming from north and central delhi will alight passengers
at appu ghar and those coming from east and south will terminate
at bhairon road.
